Hindi papers in SSC, railway and state exams often ask you to pick the correct form of a sentence (शुद्ध वाक्य चुनिए). Most of these questions test a small set of rules. Learn the ten rules below and you will be able to answer the large majority of them.
1. Use ने with transitive verbs in the perfect past
When the verb has an object (सकर्मक क्रिया) and the sentence is in the completed past, the subject takes ने:
- ✗ मैं खाना खा लिया है। → ✓ मैंने खाना खा लिया है।
2. With ने, the verb agrees with the object
Once ने is used, the verb follows the gender and number of the object, not the subject:
- ✗ सीता ने गीत गाई। → ✓ सीता ने गीत गाया। (गीत is masculine)
3. No ने with intransitive verbs, or with लाना
Verbs without an object (जाना, आना, सोना) never take ने. लाना is a special case: even though it has an object, it does not take ने, because it is formed from ले + आना.
- ✗ मैंने बाज़ार गया। → ✓ मैं बाज़ार गया।
- ✗ उसने किताब लाया। → ✓ वह किताब लाया।
4. Check the gender of the noun
Adjectives and verbs must match the noun’s gender. Exams like nouns whose gender students often get wrong:
| Masculine (पुल्लिंग) | Feminine (स्त्रीलिंग) |
|---|---|
| दही, पानी, मोती, घी | पुस्तक, आत्मा, सड़क, चाय |
- ✗ यह पुस्तक बहुत अच्छा है। → ✓ यह पुस्तक बहुत अच्छी है।
5. का, की, के follow the noun that comes after
- ✗ राम का बहन आई। → ✓ राम की बहन आई। (बहन is feminine)
6. Some words are always plural
प्राण, हस्ताक्षर, दर्शन, होश are used in the plural in standard Hindi:
- ✓ उसके प्राण निकल गए। ✓ मैंने हस्ताक्षर कर दिए।
7. Respect takes the plural
Words of respect (पिताजी, गुरुजी, आप) take plural verbs:
- ✗ पिताजी आ गया है। → ✓ पिताजी आ गए हैं।
8. प्रत्येक and हर take the singular
- ✗ प्रत्येक छात्रों को पुरस्कार मिला। → ✓ प्रत्येक छात्र को पुरस्कार मिला।
Similarly, अनेक is already plural, so अनेकों is treated as incorrect.
9. Avoid repeated meaning (पुनरुक्ति दोष)
If two words mean the same thing, keep only one:
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| कृपया करके | कृपया | कृपया already means कृपा करके |
| सप्रमाण सहित | सप्रमाण | स- already means सहित |
| केवल मात्र | केवल or मात्र | Both mean “only” |
| सबसे सर्वश्रेष्ठ | सर्वश्रेष्ठ | सर्व already means सबसे |
10. Use the right postposition (परसर्ग)
- Meeting someone: आपसे मिलना (not आपको मिलना).
- Sitting on something: कुर्सी पर बैठना (not कुर्सी में).
How to solve these questions quickly
- Find the verb and ask: is it past tense with an object? (Rules 1–3.)
- Check every adjective and का/की/के against the gender of its noun. (Rules 4–5.)
- Look for always-plural words, words of respect and प्रत्येक. (Rules 6–8.)
- Finally, scan for repeated meaning and wrong postpositions. (Rules 9–10.)
